Maria Kalinina's photographs transform the traces of ancient cultures into a conversation about how symbols endure through time. Stone, water, ruins, and ornaments become clues to the myths that connect different countries and eras. Maria Kalinina has gathered visual evidence in her travels through Iran, Mexico, India, Turkey, Serbia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, and Russia. She is interested in fragments where the memory of the whole is preserved: a column fragment, a stone from an ancient structure, a trace of water on rocks, a mark on the surface. The author seeks not a ready illustration to a story, but a point of entry into the myth-a small detail through which scale, time, and the human need to explain the world through images emerge. A shard, a crack, or a pattern here are important as conduits: they do not tell everything directly but trigger associations. The project is built on the idea that symbols operate deeper than dry rules. They help maintain a connection between cultures, ancient rituals, architecture, and today’s perspective. In her frames, myth remains not an abstract theory, but an experience of encountering a world where the past continues to speak through stone, light, and form.
