What does a path look like if it has no route? The Contemporary Art Gallery of GMI RT opens a solo exhibition of Ildar Nafiev - an artist who has long moved away from illustrative accuracy towards free painterly expression. Nafiev is known as a master of book graphics and caricature, but in recent years his interest has shifted towards abstraction - where color and line work like sound and pause. The exhibition features paintings, graphics, and mixed media works, and it is not a retrospective in the usual sense, but rather an attempt to capture the movement of thought. His visual language is easily recognizable by its rhythm: spots come together in almost musical phrases, and forms hover on the edge of the recognizable and the elusive. Behind the artist are dozens of designed books and work with major publishers, but here there is no applied task, only a personal gesture. This is where the tension arises: between the experience of an illustrator and the desire to speak without a narrative.
