About

Winged yet flightless inhabitants of the southern seas become the heroes of a museum narrative about how nature learned to survive in the ice. The exhibition showcases these birds as champions of endurance, whose anatomy and behavior have adapted over tens of millions of years to wind, ice, and salty water. The exhibition begins with familiar silhouettes in 'tails' and step by step reveals the complex biology behind them. In accessible language, it explains why wings turned into flippers, how the feathered armor retains heat, and how colonies withstand storms and frost. A separate section is dedicated to the diversity of species and their geography. It reminds us that alongside icy deserts, there are also softer landscapes where birds coexist with tropical vegetation and ancient reptiles. It tells how they learned to dive to great depths and hold their breath, what strategies they use for raising chicks, and why their colonies can be seen even from space. The final section addresses evolution. Where to go in Moscow today will be told by our website.
