The series questions the familiar confidence in the view of the human face and prompts reflection on the nature of empathy. Before the viewer are portraits, where real people coexist with images created by artificial intelligence. Polina Savina's project is structured as an intellectual trap. The photographs feature 24 individuals, but some of these faces have never existed outside the digital realm. The artist deliberately does not disclose where documentary ends and generation begins, inviting the viewer to scrutinize the expressions of the eyes, features, and their own reactions. Thus, the series transforms into an experience of doubt, where familiar ways of recognizing the living fail. The work refers to the well-known artistic gesture of the art group AES+F from the late 1990s, where viewers were also invited to guess the fates of others without receiving direct answers. However, here this strategy takes on a new dimension: the question is no longer about biography, but about the very possibility of feeling the presence of personality in an artificially created image. The longer this visual contact lasts, the harder it becomes to maintain confidence that empathy should be subordinated to knowledge of the origin of the image.
