The installation addresses the habit of endlessly saving images and explores how digital memory has transformed from a means of capturing the important into a space of saturation. The project examines which narratives repeatedly settle in mobile galleries. At the center of this work by Nadia Kolaeva is a daily practice that has long become almost automatic. Smartphones and cloud storage have given people the ability to save an infinite number of snapshots, and with this, the very logic of remembering has changed. Whereas before the camera was often turned on for special occasions, now almost everything becomes a photograph: random light, food, the road, the sea, a face, an object, a moment one wants to hold onto. It is from this accumulation that the project has grown. The artist has collected screenshots from the mobile galleries of people of different ages and from different countries over several years, turning private archives into material for observing collective digital memory. A manual analysis of this array allowed for seeing which images are repeated most often and what modern individuals repeatedly consider worthy of capture or simply beautiful.
