About

Curatorial tour will tell how in the 20th century free time became an important part of life - from sports and gardening to modeling, tourism, photography, and computer games. Participants will see how hobbies reflected the era, technologies, state ideas, and personal desire to live more interestingly every day after work. Free time seems like something taken for granted, but in the scale of history, it is a relatively new value. In the 20th century, leisure became a mass phenomenon: people had hours to dedicate to sports, collections, gardening, hiking, photography, modeling, or games. The tour helps to examine the century through these habits - lively, recognizable, and often very personal. The route will go through the exhibition "Free Time," where hobbies are presented as a reflection of the era. Participants will learn why amateur sports held a special place at the beginning of the century, how gardening became an important part of everyday life in the 1930s, what was attractive about modeling during the Brezhnev period, and how computer games entered people's lives during the perestroika years. Specific stories are related to collecting in the 1920s, the development of tourism, and amateur photography during the thaw, as well as the question of whether there could be "dissidents" in the field of leisure.
