Beavers change shorelines, build dams, and help entire ecosystems. Kids will learn how these animals have adapted to water, why they nearly disappeared in Russia, and how they returned, will look at books about rodents, and will make a craft. In the children's class, beavers will be examined as important participants in the natural system, capable of literally reshaping the space around them. Employees of the eco-center "Losiny Ostrov" will explain why beavers are called "engineers of ecosystems." Kids will learn how their lives are structured near water, why they need strong teeth, dense fur, a tail, and the ability to build dams, and how their work affects shorelines, plants, water bodies, and other inhabitants. A separate part of the class will be dedicated to the history of river beavers in Russia. By the early 20th century, they had nearly disappeared, and specialists had to work hard to restore the population. The host, Svetlana Kazakova, will show the kids rare books about Russian rodents from the collection of the Russian State Library for Youth. The class is designed for children aged 6 to 12.
