The guitar will sound in various forms-from ancient instruments to electric drive-creating a lively dialogue between eras and styles. The thirteenth guitar music festival at the Moscow International House of Music showcases how differently the same instrument can sound. The first evening of the cycle gathers performers working with classical music, jazz, original compositions, and rock on stage. The program features the baroque lute, viola da gamba, classical and acoustic guitars, electric guitar, and each appearance changes the character of the sound. Denis Shipulin is responsible for the classical line of the concert. His part is constructed as a cohesive story without words, alternating transparent textures and dense chords. In such transitions, it is especially clear how flexible the instrument is: it holds attention in chamber episodes and fills the hall when the musician brings forth broad melodic phrases. Ivan Smirnov Jr. takes the stage with an acoustic guitar and quartet. His sets echo jazz and folk, featuring free improvisational moves and attention to rhythm. The ensemble's parts catch and support the guitar, turning each composition into a dialogue between the soloist and the collective. For the audience, this is a rare opportunity to hear the continuation of a well-known family tradition while simultaneously feeling how the younger generation works with the legacy in new ways. Felix Antipov turns to ancient instruments. The lute and viola da gamba sound soft and intimate, reminding us that the history of guitar culture has its roots in the salon music of 17th-18th century Europe. After this performance, the final block featuring Nikolai Devlet-Kildeev and his band is perceived even more contrastingly. The electric guitar here becomes the main voice, and the ensemble creates a rich sound space around it.
