About

The city choir "Chor Major" will transform songs by Muse, Scorpions, Radiohead, Cranberries, "Aria", "Nautilus", "Alliance", and "Splin" into a multi-voiced program. Before the performance, musicologist Timofey Chaplyuk will explain how the choir entered popular music, why it needs hip-hop beats, and what happens to heavy metal when instruments are replaced by voices. Choral singing has long gone beyond the academic stage. Harmony is heard in rock compositions, pop medleys, soundtracks, and experimental recordings, and a familiar song, after being rearranged for dozens of voices, can completely change its character. The first evening of the new musical-educational cycle will showcase this process with concrete examples. The program will be performed by the city collective "Chor Major". The repertoire will include compositions by Muse, Scorpions, Limp Bizkit, Radiohead, and The Cranberries, as well as songs by "Aria", "Nautilus", "Alliance", "Splin", and other groups. Different styles will meet in one format: guitar parts, rhythmic patterns, and recognizable melodies will be conveyed by human voices. Before the performance, musicologist and cultural expert Timofey Chaplyuk will give a short lecture. He will talk about how choral groups have established themselves in popular music, who started compiling medleys of radio hits for them, and why the choir can work organically with hip-hop and heavy rock. A separate topic is related to singing in a fictional language - a technique that allows perceiving the voice as a musical instrument. Ideas for where to go in Yekaterinburg are collected on our website.
