Photographs from the late 19th to early 20th centuries show Moscow at a time of urban transformation. The exhibition allows visitors to see the everyday life of the White Stone city through the eyes of witnesses of the era. The exhibition focuses on genre photography from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, capturing the everyday life of Moscow and its residents during a period of rapid change. The foundation of the exhibition consists of photographs that depict urban streets, squares, markets, and the daily lives of city dwellers. The visual series refers to the image of the Golden Domed city, familiar from the journalism of Vladimir Gilyarovsky, and conveys the atmosphere of a vibrant, multi-layered city. The turn of the century is presented as a time of coexistence of different eras: next to monasteries and merchant quarters, apartment buildings emerge, cobblestone streets give way to asphalt, horse-drawn trams coexist with the first electric trams, and gas lighting is replaced by electric lighting. Photography becomes an important tool for documenting these changes, allowing the preservation of the appearance of disappearing spaces, professions, and social types. The exhibition features works by professionals and amateurs. Studios on central streets captured portraits, official events, and architecture, reporters documented street life, construction, and celebrations, while amateur cameras preserved the most accurate and lively scenes of everyday life.
