Naive artists view theater without academic rules - through bright scenes, portraits of beloved artists, and humorous observations from behind the scenes. The exhibition features images of Chinese theater and lubok nyanhua alongside Russian themes - thus the history of the stage forms a lively, colorful mosaic. When people mention "theatrical life," they usually recall posters, premieres, and strict rows of seats. Here, theater is shown through the eyes of naive artists - individuals who paint without academic training but with rare courage and directness. Their canvases resemble a viewer's diary: somewhere there is the hustle of rehearsals, somewhere the celebration of a street performance, and somewhere a portrait of a beloved artist, as if snatched from memory. The exhibition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theater Workers of Russia and gathers works from the collection of the Museum of Russian Lubok and Naive Art. In these images, theater appears multi-layered: from folk amusements and buffoonish aesthetics to the feeling of the stage as a separate world with its own rules, fears, and joys. A separate section is dedicated to Chinese theater. It helps to see how "theatricality" can look different in graphics and painting: from early lubok nyanhua, where the heroes hardly reveal their stage origins, to later sheets where costume, gesture, and plot dynamics emerge. The exhibition also features recognizable heroes of naive art. In the works of Pavel Petrovich Leonov, theater emerges as a celebration for city dwellers - with movement, music, and a sense of happy order. A memorable genre scene by Valentina Cherepnina depicts a queue at the box office: in the crowd, characters are discernible, and the wait becomes part of the performance. Completing the narrative is a series of wooden-metal sculptures by Vladimir Ivanovich Agapov - a find from the latest acquisitions of the fund.
