About

The Museum of Architecture and Design has opened an exhibition where the graphics of Vasily Kandinsky are arranged by the stages of his life - from early woodcuts to late abstract sheets. In the halls, the artist's journey quietly unfolds, revealing his perception of the connection between color and sound. The exhibition was curated by Bashmakov Gallery, which has been searching for Kandinsky's works across various countries for over ten years. In the 1930s, his works fell under the Nazi campaign against "degenerate art," and some pieces were destroyed, making the surviving sheets feel almost like rare fragments. Here, you can see over 50 original graphic works, including the series Klänge and "Memories of the Past," as well as lithographs and woodcuts from different years. Some sheets were published after the artist's death by his widow, Nina Kandinskaya. The exhibition route is designed to show how Kandinsky's language changes: from dense, almost carved graphics to a more free abstraction. The early works belong to the period of "The Rider" - a less familiar layer of his creativity for the viewer. Next are the 1920s, the time of Bauhaus, where his style becomes more recognizable and systematic. The exhibition concludes with the period of his French years featuring biomorphic forms resembling internal cosmic schemes. Ideas on where to go in Yekaterinburg are collected on our website.
