A three-year restoration has changed the conventional view of Titian's late painting: colors, volume, and details have returned from beneath the darkened layers. The exhibition showcases the painting along with the results of research that turned its study into a detective work. The story begins with what had long remained hidden under varnish and late records. After cleaning, the saint was found to have blue eyes and long locks, while the lower part of the canvas revealed broken arrows, sandals, a tree trunk, and a warrior's cuirass. The figure became more voluminous, and the landscape regained depth thanks to the collision of the sunset with the glow of the fire. X-rays showed that the master used a canvas with an almost completed 'Denarius of Caesar,' expanding it with additional pieces of fabric. Changes in the position of the legs, arrows, and loincloth are also visible. These traces disproved the previous version of an accidental change in composition: the full-length image was conceived from the start. Another find was a purple pigment from fluorite. Previously, it had been encountered with some northern masters, but it was not recorded in Titian's palette. Mineral samples help understand what raw materials were used to make the paints and how complex the technique of the late period was. The canvas was created in Venice during the plague epidemic.
