The exhibition features works that allow us to see how art changed from the era of classicism to the 20th century. Among the authors are Orest Kiprensky, Ivan Aivazovsky, Mikhail Vrubel, Konstantin Korovin, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, and other renowned masters. At the heart of the project is a collection of paintings, graphics, sculptures, and rare editions associated with the names of the greatest masters and heroes of Russian history. The exhibition is structured as a smooth journey through time: from strict formal portraits and intimate depictions of contemporaries of Alexander Pushkin to expressive sheets by artists of the late 19th to 20th centuries. Portraits of emperors, courtiers, and military leaders coexist with more intimate images of private individuals. A separate section is dedicated to graphics and illustrations: here one can trace how literary texts transform into visual images.
