About

The project examines the medieval sanctuaries of Serbia as part of a living cultural memory that is under threat. Through digital technologies, architectural images, and ancient copies of frescoes, the viewer sees why heritage needs constant protection. In this project, the medieval monasteries and churches of Serbia are fragile witnesses of eras that continue to exist in a complex modernity. The main characters of the exhibition are four monuments recognized as part of the world heritage and included in the list of endangered sites. These are the Visoki Dečani, the Patriarchate of Peć, Gračanica, and the Church of the Mother of God in Lešak. Augmented reality helps to view these places differently. Through special portals, the viewer sees fragments of paintings, details of buildings, the current appearance of the monuments, and traces of restoration work. Technology here does not argue with antiquity but becomes a tool for a careful gaze: it brings closer what usually remains far away. A separate line is the copies of frescoes created by Valentin Shcherbakov during his trip to Serbia in the early 20th century. These sheets connect the history of Balkan art with the Russian research tradition. They remind us that preservation begins with interest: to see, sketch, study, and pass on. On KUDAGO, we tell about unusual exhibitions in Moscow.
