About

The project opens a little-known page of Carlo Rossi's creativity and invites visitors to view the Winter Palace through the eyes of its court architect. This is a great opportunity to learn how the interiors of the imperial residence were envisioned and what of those ideas has survived to this day. The exhibition is dedicated to the works of Carlo Rossi related to the design of residential and ceremonial spaces of the main imperial residence. Unlike the famous ensembles of St. Petersburg, these projects remained in the shadows for a long time: many interiors were never realized, some were lost after the fire of 1837, or were rebuilt later. Thus, the opportunity to see the preserved evidence of the architect's ideas is all the more valuable. The stands feature architectural drawings, images of interiors, documents, and memoirs of contemporaries. Visitors will learn how the palace halls were prepared for visits from high guests, what the original appearance of the Military Gallery of 1812 was like, and where today one can find items of decorative applied art created according to Rossi's sketches. A special event will be the return of one of the elements of historical decor to the hall: the coats of arms of the provinces, created according to the architect's design and kept in the funds for over a century, will once again take their place in the sculptural composition. The exhibition complements the familiar image of Rossi and makes his legacy more complete and alive. For other exhibitions in St. Petersburg, check KUDAGO.
