About

The Iranian cloak and harness serve as a reason to recall the diplomatic history in which a court gift traveled from a St. Petersburg mansion to the imperial collection. At the center of the story is a gift presented to Prince Peter Saltykov during the visit of the Iranian prince Khosrow Mirza to Russia. The mission arrived after the tragic events in Tehran, where Alexander Griboedov was killed, and every gesture of the embassy carried weight. The cloak made of black velvet attracts attention with its rich embroidery. The ornament "flowers and birds" occupies almost the entire front side, pink silk is hidden on the reverse, and the metallic fringe emphasizes the silhouette. This work features Resht embroidery-a technique from northwestern Iran. The harness sounds different-through the shine of enamel, gold, and stones. The thin straps of the bridle and breastplate are adorned with overlays, rubies, spinels, beryls, and an aquamarine inlay. The fate of the items is almost adventurous: they entered Saltykov's collection, later appeared on the European market, were purchased for the Tsarskoye Selo "Arsenal," and then transferred to the Hermitage. Now they return to the history of their first museum display. All entertainment in St. Petersburg is collected on KUDAGO.
