About

The exhibition explores the sharp and contradictory dialogue of the Russian avant-garde with classical heritage. The focus is on the struggle, rethinking, and new appropriation of the poet's figure as a cultural symbol. The exposition addresses the paradox of the early 20th century: radical artists and poets, who called for a break with the past, entered into a tense conversation with the main name of Russian culture. Starting from the image of the "sun of poetry," the project shows how the gesture of denial gradually transformed into a complex system of rethinking, quotations, and mythologization. The route is constructed from the scandalous manifestos of the futurists to their attempts to rediscover and rewrite the legacy of the classic. In this process, art becomes a field of conflict, where old forms are destroyed to make way for new artistic and intellectual strategies. The works of leading masters of the avant-garde demonstrate how the struggle against the "petrified" canon gave birth to unexpected visual solutions and expanded the boundaries of art. The dialogue continues into the present. Alongside works from the early century, the exhibition features works by artists from recent decades, for whom the figure of the poet remains a source of disputes, irony, and new interpretations. Among them are Olga Tobreluts, Dmitry Prigov, and Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe. This comparison emphasizes the continuity of the cultural process and shows how the conflict with the past becomes a driving force for renewal. The project brings together about a hundred works from museum and private collections, many of which are being exhibited for the first time, and offers a view of classical heritage without the usual distance-as a living material capable of provoking and inspiring new art. The exhibition takes place in the Western building on the 3rd floor. For other exhibitions in St. Petersburg, look for KUDAGO.
