Ivan Novikov's project presents a new chapter in abstract painting, built on the extreme limitation of expressive means. The focus is on the experience of the future and the state of oblivion as a special experience. The exhibition combines paintings and installation and becomes the artist's first solo presentation in the St. Petersburg context. The curator of the project is an independent researcher of contemporary art. Work on the series of abstract canvases began in the summer of 2022. These works are characterized by a complex painting structure and a multitude of shades that together create a sense of a single color - blue. Thus, a field of monochrome painting is formed, in which the author reflects on the uncertainty of the future. The starting point is a specific color sensation - the warm glow of a television screen at the moment of broadcasting cessation, when the flow of images is replaced by a pause and visual silence. The artist consciously reduces expressive means to the color blue, setting the framework for a long-term project that continues until the imagined image of the future coincides with reality. This limitation allows for a focused gaze into the current moment in time. Each new series within the project is related to a separate theme and does not repeat previous motifs. In the presented works, the author addresses oblivion as a special state of consciousness that exists beyond memory. It is interpreted as an opportunity to touch what lies beyond ordinary experience and theoretical constructs. This state is indescribable but can be lived - in moments when the usual flow of time is disrupted. The exhibition invites one to abandon interpretations and focus on the immediate perception of abstract painting as an experience that transcends the boundaries of everyday life.
