About

The exhibition shows how one of the first monuments to Alexander Pushkin in the Russian Empire was conceived and created, and how the fate of the monument changed through revolutions, oblivion, and restoration. At the heart of the project is the history of the sculpture, which has remained a point of attraction for lovers of Russian literature for over a century. Visitors are invited to return to the 1910s when Count Sergey Sheremetev conceived the idea of immortalizing writers and poets associated with the Ostafyevo estate. Sketches, archival photos, and documents illustrate how the monuments to Nikolai Karamzin, Pyotr and Pavel Vyazemsky, Vasily Zhukovsky, and Alexander Pushkin came into being. A whole section is dedicated to the changes of the 20th century. It recounts how in 1930, the bronze portrait of Pushkin, cast at the Morana factory from the gypsum original by Alexander Opekushin and considered accurate "in likeness and concept," was removed from its pedestal and sent to Leningrad, and in its place a bust of the poet by an unknown author appeared. The final part of the story is connected to the return of the estate to museum status in the late 1980s and the restoration of the monuments. Entertainment in Moscow can be found on our website.
