About

The exhibition reveals Soviet everyday life through the lens of Vladimir Sychyov - without the parade gloss, but with a lively attention to people and details. Vladimir Sychyov captured Soviet everyday life in such a way that next to a portrait of Lenin on the wall could stand a person with a shopping bag, and an ordinary kitchen transforms into a place where the fate of unofficial art is decided. He was friends with nonconformist artists - Oscar Rabin, Ilya Kabakov, Edward Steinberg - and not only photographed them but also welcomed them into his apartment for illegal exhibitions. Therefore, there is no distance of an observer in the photographs: the camera looks at people as a friend looks. The exhibition is based on three lines that constantly flow into one another. "Soviet Everyday Life" and "Faces of the Underground" show the same people either in kitchens or on the street - Kabakov, Rabin, poet Leonid Gubanov, musician Alexei Khvostenko. The third section gathers shots from the first permitted outdoor showing of nonconformists in Izmailovo - the moment when apartment art finally came to light.
