About

Porcelain figures from the Imperial Porcelain Factory series showcase Russia through costume, plasticity, and ethnographic detail. The main characters of the exhibition are small porcelain sculptures, which are based on a significant research concept. In the early 20th century, at the initiative of Nicholas II, a series of figures dedicated to the peoples of the Russian Empire was conceived. For this, ethnographic collections, expedition materials, photographs, and anthropological sources were studied. The work on the images was entrusted to sculptor Pavel Kamensky, with scientific supervision by academician Vasily Radlov. In these figurines, the fit of clothing, headgear, ornamentation, silhouette, everyday accuracy, and the attempt to convey character through porcelain are important. In Pavlovsk, 15 sculptures from the recreated series are presented. Among them are images of the Golds, an indigenous small-numbered people of the Far East, and the Lops from the Kola Peninsula. A coat made of fish skin, a birch bark hat, costumes made of reindeer hides, embroidery, and painting turn each work into a story about the region, climate, and tradition. We tell you how to organize leisure in St. Petersburg.
