Sofia Andreeva analyzes the silhouette of the matryoshka through historical, folkloric, and contemporary layers. Three series of works show how the image changes with the era, transforming from a souvenir into a way to talk about memory and self-perception. The heroine of the exhibition travels between different epochs and cultural representations. In some works, she resembles an ancient figure connected to the first images of humanity and nature, while in others, she takes on traits of Soviet everyday life or is adorned with folk patterns. Three series are presented here: "Matryoshkas of the Stone Age," "Matryoshkas of the Soviet Era," and "Matryoshkas with Folk Ornaments." Sofia Andreeva uses the matryoshka as a model of multilayered culture. The outer shell seems understandable, yet behind it lie different epochs, stereotypes, and personal interpretations. The artist juxtaposes the serious and the comic, not assigning a single meaning to the character. Ideas on where to go in Moscow are collected on KUDAGO.
