A small exhibition addresses how the innovative searches of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso changed the perceptions of the role of color and the construction of form in art. The exhibition features works by two artists whose artistic decisions largely defined the development of painting in the coming decades. The viewer sees contrasting works in temperament, where color becomes an independent statement, and form ceases to be merely a means of conveying reality. The curators highlight how the ideas of Parisian modernism resonated with the masters of Russian avant-garde. In their search for a new artistic language, Lyubov Popova, Nadezhda Udaltsova, Alexandra Exter, Vladimir Tatlin, Kazimir Malevich, and their contemporaries carefully studied fresh approaches to working with plane, volume, and line.
