The audience is invited to peek into the workshop where an ancient masterpiece is being brought back to life: the story of the canvas with a dramatic biblical plot intertwines with the tale of its salvation. At the center of the exhibition is a large canvas by Luca Giordano featuring a powerful biblical episode. Sharp contrasts of light and shadow, swift gestures, and tense gazes enhance the drama of the scene where royal cruelty clashes with maternal despair. The work "The Massacre of the Innocents" belongs to the early period of the master's creativity and retains the influence of José de Ribera. An important part of the story is dedicated to the fate of the painting. Once it was part of famous collections, then it ended up in a dire state: rolled canvas, deformations, late inscriptions over the author's painting. The exhibition explains how restorers gradually returned the work to its original appearance, using paint analysis, research in the infrared and ultraviolet ranges, and archival sources.
