About

The project examines the Soviet color postcard as an expressive document of the era. Through mass-produced cards, everyday life, urban views, and the perspectives of photographers, who are often remembered for other subjects, are revealed. At the center of attention are more than 90 postcards from the 1950s to the 1970s from the museum's collection. They were printed from photographs by Boris Kudoyarov, Georgy Zelma, Dmitry Balterman, Mikhail Trachman, David Trachtenberg, and other masters. Many of these authors entered history as front-line photo correspondents, but here their works resonate more softly: children on hikes, floral compositions, young athletes, urban panoramas, faces of people from different republics. The exhibition shows how the postcard became part of the visual culture of the USSR. Following decisions made in the early 1950s, the production of postcards was meant to become mass and high-quality, and photography received a new channel of distribution. Color processes developed, domestic films and printing manuals appeared, thus the format of greetings transformed into a gallery of images of the country. Even with editorial assignments, controversial color reproduction, cropping, or errors in captions, the photographs retained the photographer's intonation, choice of subject, and attitude towards the moment. Postcards went into family albums, accompanied greetings and letters, and preserved memories of trips and celebrations. The poster for St. Petersburg is available on KUDAGO.
