Sketches, models, photographs, documents - over 170 exhibits from leading Russian museums, archives, and libraries are presented at the exhibition dedicated to constructivism and the 100th anniversary of the Union of Modern Architects. Visitors to the exhibition at the Shchusev Museum of Architecture will get acquainted with the works and ideas of the leaders of constructivism - Mikhail Barshch, the Vesnin brothers, Ivan Leonidov, Lydia Komarova, Vyacheslav Vladimirov, and many other architects. Regarding constructivism, these artists preferred to use the term not "style", but "method", which is reflected in the title of the exhibition. For them, constructivism was a way of understanding new processes and connections in society during the 1920s and 30s. The exhibition is located on three floors of the "Ruina" wing and consists of seven sections. Its key theme is constructivism as a creative system of thinking. On the first floor, projects related to the exploration of the sky and breaking the boundaries of previous engineering possibilities, a new constructive system made of metal, concrete, and glass, freely flowing interiors, and the idea of a mobile living cell are presented. Architects viewed constructivism as a project for restructuring society, and these ideas are reflected in the exhibition on the second floor. The architectural projects presented here combine functionality and the psychology of collective living. Special models of a commune for miners by Nikolai Kuzmin and a commune house developed by Mikhail Barshch and Vyacheslav Vladimirov were recreated specifically for the exhibition. There is also a section dedicated to constructivism as a fashionable style, and the exhibition concludes with the section "Archetype".
