About

The exhibition reveals the equestrian genre as an important part of Romantic culture. Through the graphics of 19th-century masters, it traces how the image of the horse became a symbol of freedom and historical change. In the graphics of the Romantic era, the image of the horse goes beyond the everyday motif and becomes an expression of the time. The project brings together over 70 works from private collections - watercolors, lithographs, drawings, and engravings by European and Russian masters. Among the authors are Théodore Géricault, Eugène Delacroix, Alexander Orlovsky, representatives of the Vernet dynasty, Jean-Baptiste Madou, Nikolai Sverchkov, Franz Krüger. The exhibition traces how in the first half of the 19th century, the horse transformed into a symbol of freedom, strength, and heroism. Interest in the theme was heightened by the military events of the era and the demands of the aristocracy, which influenced the development of battle painting and animalism. The works show the transition from depicting a loyal companion of man to the image of an independent and powerful being, reflecting the spirit of the time. Entertainment in Moscow is collected on our website.
