About

Rare canes with porcelain and glass handles reveal themselves as an elegant detail of everyday life and a status symbol. The exhibition showcases the evolution of the accessory under the influence of fashion, collector's taste, and European etiquette. At the center of the project are canes from the late 18th to early 20th century, items that have long transcended their utilitarian purpose. Their handles made of porcelain, glass, and crystal become separate works of decorative art: here, form, painting, material, the gesture of the hand, and the social role of the owner are important. The exhibition discusses the 19th century in detail-a time when the cane was at its peak. Among the references are the blue cobalt of Sèvres, floral motifs from Limoges, and sculptural figurines from Meissen. Through these details, one can trace how tastes in Europe and Russia changed and why the accessory became part of the costume. A separate narrative is connected to the Russian tradition. Interest in canes here strengthened during the time of Peter the Great, and women's fashion for them is associated with Catherine the Great, who owned a notable collection of such items. Visitors will see what makes up a cane: shaft, tip, and pommel. Porcelain, glass, metal, copies of graphics, paintings, and magazine covers help to present the everyday context: noble drawing rooms, studies, libraries, images of ladies and gentlemen. Where to go in Moscow on weekends, KUDAGO will suggest.
