About

Photographs tell the story of urban interiors through details, ornaments, and the work of craftsmen. The exhibition shows how ceramics transformed from a utilitarian object into a symbol of taste, status, and artistic fashion. The history of tiled stoves begins long before the appearance of palaces and tenement houses. In Russian daily life, they became established at the turn of the 16th-17th centuries: initially, these were relief terracotta tiles, later - glossy glazed coverings in green and brown shades, and then polychrome decor with bright enamels. In the 18th century, "pictorial" stoves appeared with paintings on a smooth background, done in a European manner. Later, the fashion changed to white-glazed stoves with relief decor - such items were valued far beyond the capital. In the second half of the 19th century, tiled fireplaces became an important part of urban interiors. Active housing construction, population growth, and interest in beautiful household items made them a notable symbol of wealth and taste. By the early 20th century, relief, color, and ornaments inspired by Russian antiquity returned to fashion. The photographs allow viewers to examine preserved examples of this tradition: form, glaze, pattern, scale, decorative details. The history of craftsmanship and the image of a city is revealed, where even a heating stove could become a work of art. We share ideas on where to go in St. Petersburg this weekend.
