A large-scale retrospective of one of the main Russian artists gathers about 120 works from the largest museum collections. In the spotlight is painting, where every branch, trunk, and gap between the trees appears as a result of a long, focused conversation with nature. Ivan Shishkin painted the forest with almost scientific attention, but his paintings do not reduce to impeccable accuracy. They convey a personal memory, a connection to childhood places, and the quiet strength of the earth. Viewers will see both monumental canvases and intimate studies. Among them are famous works without which it is hard to imagine the history of Russian art, as well as works that allow for a broader view of the master: as a painter who sought not an impressive view, but an honest and deep image of nature.
