About

The exhibition explores the influence of Indian textiles on global fashion. The project shows how South Asian traditions have taken root in contemporary world culture. The project brings together over 300 samples of fabrics and costumes from museum collections, private collections, and fashion house archives, presenting Indian textiles in a broad cultural and historical context. International participation allows tracing the connections between Indian weaving and global fashion-from traditional techniques to unexpected parallels with European and Russian prêt-à-porter, including Ivanovo's red-and-white calico. Seven halls are structured around the history of cotton, silk, and wool, as well as key practices-embroidery, dyeing, ornamentation, and sari culture. The curatorial approach is based on comparisons: Indian miniatures coexist with grand portraits of the 19th century, Impressionist paintings-with traditional men's attire. This reveals how Indian patterns, symbols, and visual codes have influenced fashion and mass culture in the 20th and 21st centuries and have deeply entered everyday wardrobes. The project is accompanied by an extensive program: over 30 events featuring designers and researchers, family workshops, and activities for children. Teenagers can look forward to a fashion lab with a full design process, while adults are offered tours, lectures, discussions, and practical classes on natural dyeing, weaving, fabric printing, fragrance creation, and sari tying.
