About

Triangular clouds, coral hills, and soaring scrolls help to recognize the style of the masters from the Upper Volga region. Nine icons, old views of the city, and photographs of churches come together to tell a story about a rare branch of late Russian religious art. At first glance, the eye is caught by the details: pink coexists with grass-green, the folds of garments twist in a baroque manner, and the gestures of the characters turn the static scene into a drama. This is how the icon painters of Romanov-Borisoglebsk - present-day Tutayev - worked. Their works were created for wealthy Old Believer patrons and were rarely repeated, so few monuments have survived. At the center of the exhibition are nine icons from the late 18th to the third quarter of the 19th century. Three works are linked by researchers to the Arkhipov workshop. Other pieces show how local artists reinterpreted well-known iconographic schemes. The context is set by lithographs depicting views of the city and two photographs of the Resurrection Cathedral from the 1880s-1890s. They were restored to show alongside the icons the environment in which this artistic tradition developed. We tell you how to organize leisure in St. Petersburg.
