About

This exhibition introduces the painting and graphics of Vik - an artist of Leningrad's unofficial art, whose works combine iconographic tradition, avant-garde boldness, and theatrical expressiveness. In his images, mystical St. Petersburg, biblical motifs, and the world of Dostoevsky meet. The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Vik - an artist, poet, restorer, and one of the notable representatives of Leningrad's unofficial art of the second half of the 20th century. His journey began with studies at the Serov Art School, and by the 1970s, his works were appearing in exhibitions in Russia and abroad. Later, he became an important figure in the artistic community, participated in the creation of the Society of Experimental Visual Art, and curated projects at the intersection of painting and literature. In his art, the traditions of Russian icon painting, the theatricality of the Silver Age, and the energy of Russian avant-garde are intertwined. Dense colors and transparent glazes, people, cats, and birds, seemingly emerging from a special space, create a state of contemplation. Simplified compositions and reverse perspective draw the viewer into the images. A separate line is connected to Dostoevsky's prose. The artist referred to images from "Crime and Punishment" and "The Idiot," creating graphic scenes where anxiety and inner turmoil are conveyed through sharp lines and a nervous rhythm of strokes. Next to them, paintings imbued with biblical motifs help to feel the spiritual tension that unites the artist's world with the writer's world. We tell on our website where to go with children in St. Petersburg.
