About

The project brings together drawings by Russian masters and early photographs by travelers, revealing how artists and photographers interpreted their impressions of the world differently. The exhibition establishes a dialogue between graphics and photography, between handcrafted images and instant snapshots. Here, sheets by Russian artists from the early 20th century coexist with rare photographs from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, united by the theme of travel and observation. Visitors will see works by Boris Grigoriev, Alexei Kravchenko, Alexander Kuprin, Mikhail Larionov, Robert Falk, Nikolai Ulyanov, Lazar Lissitzky, and other masters whose works are filled with impressions from trips across Europe, the East, and South America. The artists did not just document what they saw - they sought to convey the breath of places, their rhythm, and mood. The photographs presented in the exhibition were donated by Italian journalist Roberto Scarfone. More than 300 images from Europe, Asia, Africa, and America tell the story of the emergence of cultural tourism and the establishment of the genre of travel photography. Among them are Neapolitan panoramas by Giorgio Sommer, Egyptian portraits by Ippolito Arnoux, and studies by Jean Geiser. The project is complemented by modern photographs from participants in the international mobile photography competition, creating a bridge between the past and the present.
