About

The project introduces one of the oldest toy crafts in Russia and reveals its artistic originality. The focus is on the tradition preserved and reinterpreted by a contemporary master. The exhibition brings together over 70 works by the folk artist of Russia, Natalia Maslova, and showcases the key images and characteristic features of the Kursk clay craft. The presented works cover the main themes that have developed over centuries of the traditional toy's existence, allowing us to see how folk art maintains a connection with the past while remaining alive and flexible. The exact date of the craft's emergence is unknown, but it is believed that the local pottery has existed for about 300 years, and the leather toy itself originated about 250 years ago. Over this time, forms and characters have changed, and the narrative circle has expanded. Notably, during the Soviet era, even a crocodile appeared among the images, which over time became perceived as an integral part of the tradition. Different types of clay are used to create the figures, so the products may vary slightly in shades. At the same time, the painting remains easily recognizable: the masters apply simple and rhythmic patterns - nets, sticks, rhombuses, and yolochki, forming an expressive and cohesive artistic language. What else do the museums of Peter show, KUDAGO knows.
