The Soviet photography enthusiast is a whole type of person: with their own shooting ritual, their own set of things, and instruction books that they read more seriously than any novel. In the mid-20th century, to simply take a picture, one had to understand the technology as well as an engineer. The photographer chose a camera based on their tasks: a light and accessible "Smena" if they wanted to shoot without extra hassle, or a "Zenit" from the family of SLRs if they planned to experiment with lens attachments. And still, the main tool remained not the camera or optics, but the skill - what was developed over years of trial and error. The exhibition has gathered domestic cameras from the 20th century and technical manuals - those well-read "friends" of the budding photographer, without which the shot might not have turned out. The display is arranged so that some items can be held and examined up close: twist the shutter speed dial, feel the weight of the body, flip through the pages of instructions with tables and diagrams.
