About

The exhibition is a thought experiment about the status of the author in contemporary art. It questions the usual roles of the artist and the artwork, pushing this conflict to its limits. Alexey Gromov's personal project is structured as a speculative reflection on the nature of the current artistic process. The exhibition imitates the format of a retrospective unfolded in a conditional universe where the role of the artist is given to a doll. This creates a special space where institutional critique is used as the main method of investigation. Within this scenario, the author and the object swap places: the doll acts as the creator, while the artistic world itself is composed of fragments, failures, and artifacts. Through them, a distorted, "broken" language of reality emerges, reflecting the crisis of concepts of authorship. The question of who exactly is the artist is intentionally sharpened and deprived of a clear answer. The exhibition features a large-scale multimedia installation integrated into the architecture of the space, as well as a series of medium-sized objects styled after institutional exhibition structures. These elements form a semblance of a "doppelgänger" of the modern artistic mechanism. The project addresses the tradition of artistic myth - from early biographies of masters to mockumentary strategies and autofiction. However, in the conditions of post-internet and neural networks, the figure of the author loses stability: corporeality, presence, and autonomy become problematic. The artist is reduced to a doll, the gallery to a toy space, and the creator simultaneously becomes both a subject and an exhibit. A key question arises: can the author themselves become a work of art, and where is the boundary between the practice and those who carry it out? The exhibition takes place at the FUTURO gallery in the territory of the contemporary art center "Vinzavod." Find other exhibitions in Moscow on KUDAGO.
