The exhibition is dedicated to how Pushkin's famous story transformed into an independent cultural phenomenon. Painting, graphics, costume sketches, cinema, and sound show how literary images continue to live in various forms of art. At the center of attention is the history of the text, where the thrill of card games, the thirst for money, and the theme of fatal mystery intertwine with observations of the morals of the first third of the 19th century. It shows how the plot about a hero obsessed with the idea of getting rich and the mysterious image of the old lady quickly transcended the pages of the book and became part of the mass imagination after its publication. A separate section tells about graphics and painting. Works by 19th-20th century artists are presented, who interpreted key scenes in their own way: the hero's meetings with the countess, night visions, and the story's finale. Here are collected illustrations by classics of domestic art, costume sketches for musical productions, and sheets created for book editions. Another block is dedicated to the stage fate of the plot. Materials for opera productions, portraits of singers in the role of the main character, and photographs of performances held at various theater venues are shown. The narrative is complemented by frames from feature films and fragments of audio performances with expressive readings of the text. The exhibition continues the museum cycle that examines the most important works of the writer.
