About

The exhibition will take visitors on a journey through the world of the Arctic - from the first romantic representations to contemporary artistic explorations of this harsh space. The project combines art and science, allowing viewers to see the North through the eyes of travelers, artists, and indigenous peoples. The exhibition spans a journey of three centuries and shows how the image of the Arctic has changed in art. Early miniature bone icons and works by the first traveling artists coexist with canvases by Soviet authors and pieces by participants of polar expeditions. Viewers will see paintings, graphics, sculptures, various rarities, photographs, and multimedia installations that create a three-dimensional portrait of the northern space. A separate section is dedicated to contemporary artists who continue to explore the theme of the Arctic through personal travel experiences and experiments with form. Projects by Leonid Tishkov, Arkady Nasonov, Fyodor Konyukhov, and Alexander Ponomaryov are presented here. Special attention is given to the works of Nenets masters Tyko Vylki and Konstantin Pankov, revealing an authentic perception of life in the North. Photographs showcase natural phenomena, polar stations, and icebreakers, while also reminding us of the fragility of the ecosystem. The project presents the Arctic as a frozen realm of inspiration, overcoming, and scientific inquiry, uniting art and a research perspective. The exhibition creates a sense of immersion in a special northern world, where majestic nature becomes both a stage and a participant in history. Artistic interpretations connect with documentary evidence, emphasizing how the Arctic has inspired generations of explorers and creators. It is a space where a person constantly tests their limits, and art helps to understand why the alluring harshness of the North continues to captivate the imagination today.
