The year of the anniversary of Konstantin Melnikov will conclude with an exhibition of works by this outstanding architect and artist. In 2025, we celebrate the 135th anniversary of the birth of one of the main innovators of his era, Konstantin Melnikov. In 1914, he graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, where one of his teachers was Konstantin Korovin, and he remained true to the style of Impressionism throughout his life. In the late 1930s, having lost the opportunity to realize his architectural projects, Melnikov withdrew into himself and fully immersed himself in painting. A key subject for the artist became his house on Krivoarbatsky Lane, where he created his own world. Family held a vital place in Melnikov's world. His loved ones became the main models for his paintings, in which their undeniable value was affirmed. Additionally, painting became for Melnikov a way to rethink his own reality and his relationship to it. A separate line of the artist's work is self-portraits. They, like the portraits, were painted in the 1930s, but differ in color solutions and interpretations of the image, reflecting the changing self-perception of the artist. The exhibition features 17 paintings restored in 2022-2025, as well as photographs, personal diaries, and letters. The main character of the exhibition appears as an innovative architect who remained true to his ideals even in difficult periods of life.
