About

The project introduces the first masters of photography who captured the life, nature, and culture of the Far East in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. Rare photographs reveal the history of the region's development. The exhibition brings together rare photographs created by the first photographers of the Far East - explorers, merchants, and scientists, for whom photography became a tool for understanding. These images tell the story of the formation of Far Eastern cities, the way of life of indigenous peoples, nature, and the daily lives of settlers. A special place is occupied by the works of Vladimir Lanin, one of the first photographers in the region, whose albums from the mid-19th century became invaluable visual evidence of the development of the Priamurye region. No less interesting are the photographs of the Frenchman Emil Nino, who combined ethnographic interest with artistic vision, as well as materials from the expeditions of zoologist Vladimir Soldatov, who documented the lives and customs of the peoples of the Amur and Ussuri. The project also includes engravings, lithographs, and illustrations created from early photographs - they show how the image of the region spread in scientific and artistic publications of their time.
