The painted canvases are accompanied by numerous graphic sheets, allowing one to trace how the author's style was formed: precision of lines, harmony of composition, attentive approach to anatomy, and expressiveness of gesture. The artist was early among the best graduates of the Academy of Arts and later became a professor of historical painting. His students remembered him as a person of impeccable training, while contemporaries called him the "Russian Raphael." A separate layer of the exhibition is dedicated to the research of Evgenia Petrova, who studied the master's works for many years, collected archives, and revealed the context of the era. Thanks to her work, one can see how broad the range of themes the artist worked with: from portraits of contemporaries and genre scenes to large biblical compositions and images created for iconostases.
