About

In an intimate circle of fans of Spanish culture, participants will discuss Federico Garcia Lorca's tragedy "Yerma" and talk about how passionate desire can determine fate. At the center of the conversation is the obsession with motherhood, the question of personal choice, and the fragile line between dream and destructive action. Sometimes one thought quietly replaces an entire life. The heroine of Federico Garcia Lorca's tragedy is so obsessed with the desire to have a child that everything else ceases to matter to her. Participants will get acquainted with Lorca's biography and the situation in contemporary Spain, discuss the place of the play among other works of the playwright. Then there will be a discussion of the play itself, in which poetry, social criticism, and the theme of women's unfreedom are intertwined. Participants will learn where the obsessive idea of motherhood, which determines the heroine's fate, originates from, and will talk about the significance of family and the role of women in traditional society.
