About

Alla, Natasha, Lada - and dozens of others. Women's pop music of the 90s was everywhere, but who was behind it - the author or the image? A meeting with a music producer and live cover versions will explore the main narratives of the era: from mystical escapism to the "strong woman" - and will honestly answer how the male gaze worked behind all of this. Women's pop music of the 90s is a separate universe: glitter, cassettes, MTV, and endless hits that still come to mind with the first notes. But behind the shine and dance rhythms lay a much more complex story - about how, in an era of complete creative freedom and economic uncertainty, gender roles in mass culture were rewritten. Or were they not rewritten after all? At the meeting in the Boris Yeltsin Museum, this question will become central. Post-Soviet pop music is perceived by many as a territory of the male gaze: women in it often found themselves as heroines of others' narratives, rather than authors of their own meanings. Songwriter and music producer Ksenia Alavatskaya, together with moderator Ivan Erdnyev, will analyze the main plot lines of the era: from mystical escapism - to the image of the "strong woman," who outwardly takes the initiative but still fully defines herself through a man.
