About

An English-language book club on the novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald will gather those who appreciate thoughtful reading and leisurely conversations about meanings. Participants will discuss symbols, characters, and the theme of the American dream, practice speaking fluently, and learn to articulate complex thoughts in English more confidently in a friendly discussion with like-minded individuals. Francis Scott Fitzgerald's novel has long become a classic, but reading it in English reveals each paragraph anew. In the reading club at the "Na Stremyannoy" library, the story of Jay Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom becomes an opportunity to talk about dreams, illusions, social contrasts, and the language in which all this is told. Here, both meaning and phrasing matter, as well as how the text sounds aloud. At the beginning of the meeting, participants recall the main events of the first chapters, share impressions of the characters, and discuss which episodes seemed the most vivid. Then, attention shifts to details: the green light at the dock, the sparkle of the parties, the luxury of the mansions, and the subtle hints from the author about the emptiness behind this facade. Through such images, it is easier to understand why the story of the "roaring twenties" still feels modern and close. A separate block is dedicated to the language of the novel. Fixed expressions, Past Perfect constructions, and techniques through which the author conveys the narrator's doubts are examined. Participants practice articulating their opinions in English, try to rephrase complex sentences, ask clarifying questions, and respond to comments from discussion partners. The work is organized in small groups so that everyone can express themselves and feel that English is suitable not only for textbooks but also for lively conversations about literature. Special attention is paid to the level of comfort. One can familiarize themselves in advance with the prepared vocabulary selection, reread certain chapters, or come with a basic knowledge of the plot-the facilitator will support the flow of conversation so that no one feels left out of the discussion. Mistakes are seen as part of the process, not a reason to be silent, so participants gradually become more confident.
