About

Old metrics, revision tales, and censuses can tell more about a family than it seems at first glance. The meeting will help to understand how to search for ancestors, read archival traces, and turn dry lines of documents into a living family history with names and fates. Archival documents may seem dry and complex, but it is in them that the voices of the past are preserved - information about births, marriages, relocations, service, godparents, guarantors, and neighbors. The meeting will show how such records help to restore the family's path. The conversation will be useful for those who want to engage in genealogy, are already collecting a home archive, or are just starting to explore the topic. Participants will learn whether it is possible to find distant ancestors about whom relatives did not speak, which sources to study first, and how not to get lost among metrics, revision tales, confession records, marriage searches, and censuses. A separate part of the meeting is dedicated to the All-Russian Agricultural, Land, and Urban Census of 1917. Speaker Irina Rakhmanova will share her personal experience working with documents and will explain how to turn a set of disparate information into a coherent family story. Register on Timepad.
