About

The meeting will connect ancient philosophy of music with the sounds of the 20th and 21st centuries. Listeners will explore the ideas of Pythagoras, the harmony of spheres, and the views of Plato and Aristotle, and then hear how reconstructors and contemporary composers turn to the legacy of ancient musical thought and transform it into a living experience of attentive listening. The music of antiquity remains a field where facts must be gathered grain by grain. Much less is known about the sound of instruments, performance practices, and the everyday musical experience of the ancient world than one would like. However, the ideas that ancient thinkers associated with music have proven to be extraordinarily resilient: they continued to influence European philosophy, aesthetics, and concepts of harmony for centuries. Listeners will consider the main theses of the Pythagorean school, where sound, number, and order were linked into a single system. Special attention will be given to Plato and Aristotle. Their reflections on music are connected to education, ethics, and the influence of rhythm and melody on a person. The lecturer is Alexander Lavrukhin, a music critic, lecturer at St. Petersburg State University, and a graduate student in the music sector of RIII. We tell you on KUDAGO where to go in St. Petersburg this weekend for free.
