About

Participants of the meeting will read Boris Vian's ironic story about a cultural machine, love poems, and living wisdom. A minimum French language proficiency level of A2 is recommended for participation. Boris Vian's story "The Danger of Classics" is about how an engineer creates a cultural machine for an embassy, his student "feeds" the machine with love poems, and the computer falls in love with a girl. The absurd story becomes an opportunity to discuss why mechanical mastery of facts does not replace a living understanding of literature. The slow reading format is suitable for those who already know a bit of French and want to transition from learning exercises to real literary text. The desired minimum level is A2. It will be interesting for participants who are ready to read, ask questions, clarify vocabulary, and analyze nuances of phrases together with the teacher. The host, Tatyana Sosenskaya, will focus the conversation on the language and meaning of the story. Participants will discuss how Vian ironizes the attempt to turn culture into a set of ready-made information, why classical literature can be dangerous in unskilled hands, and how a fantastic plot helps to talk about very real things: love, education, curiosity, and the ability to think independently.
