Photographer Sanya Shanovich will present the project "China: An Attempt to Penetrate," based on photographs taken in various provinces of China from 2014 to 2019, created using the lithprint technique. Lithprint is one of the manual methods of black-and-white gelatin-silver printing that emerged in the late 19th century. Such photographs are characterized by soft transitions from sandy to pinkish tones, graininess, and unexpected texture. Each print is unique due to the temperature, developer composition, and the degree of wear of the solution. This approach reflects not only a photographic perspective but also a painterly mindset. Sanya Shanovich's project paints an image of China that is far from the usual tourist postcards. It is the perspective of an observer seeking moments in everyday life, nature, and architecture, without drawing attention, intruding, but observing and reflecting. Temples, city streets, the faces of passersby, and the smallest details captured in fleeting moments hold a special place in the project. Sanya Shanovich is known as a master of film photography and a teacher of analog techniques. She shoots not only with regular cameras but also with a pinhole camera - a camera obscura without a lens.
